About the event

“Odes to the Ocean” (OTTO) was conceived by professional musician Catherine Shrubshall in the early part of 2023, during a 6 week creative retreat in Walton where she stayed in a flat overlooking the ocean - she wrote music inspired by stories of the sea and those whose lives depended on it.  Go here to buy the OTTO soundtrack!

This event is free but we would encourage you to support the musicians and performers either on the day or by buying one of their wonderful digital albums on Bandcamp:  Beauty Beneath: essence of calm or With Love ....from Her&Her, each at £7.00.

Catherine collaborated with composer/producer Richard Kett at “Dave Studiios” in Woodbridge to make a 45 minute soundtrack from this material, and with film maker Sally Child to create a cinematic interpretation of the music (all filmed on location in Walton). You can get a taste of the soundtrack and film here. The main characters are: women of the shore, alluring sirens, fisher girls and forgotten ancestors.

Catherine plays many instruments on the tracks…including: clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophones, conches, cow horns, singing bowls, harmonium and percussion.

This live performance under Walton Pier will feature the soundtrack,  with Georgie Ferraro (dancer), Cydnei Baines (performance artist) and Catherine Shrubshall (musician). Richard Kett is on the mixing desk….and the mighty North Sea will be joining in too.

Looking forward to welcoming you to stand, sit (bring a chair) or promenade under the pier for this event…or if you can't make the live performance, come along to 13 Old Pier Street during the weekend where chairs and a warm environment will be provided for you to experience the music and the film!

Some Background to OTTO: After premiering the music and film at THE nOse (bookshop/project space) in Walton in April 2023, the project was picked up for a month long residency at THE MINORIES in Colchester later that year. The soundtrack and film were then taken to New Zealand for showings in small venues during the first half of 2024, and now OTTO is  back"‘home” in Walton for the first “Between the Tides” Festival.

In addition to the live performance of OTTO under Walton Pier at 10 am on Sunday the 22nd September, OTTO will also be be presented as a film and soundtrack (plus an installation with boat and art work) during the afternoons of the Festival at 13 Old Pier Street.
