LOCAL STORY TELLERS & WRITERS FEATURE AT WALTON ARTS FESTIVAL

Local writers from Tendring Community Writers Group are featuring throughout the event packed programme at Walton Arts Festival 20-22 September 2024.

 

They kick off their activities with a book launch of an anthology of stories about Tendring’s coast, including poems, fiction and historic non fiction at 5pm at The Nose Bookshop, 28 Newgate Street.

Saturday at 11.15 it’s Seaside Storytime with readings for children 12 years and under at The Library, Walton High Street with Makaton signed assistance. Children must be accompanied by an adult.


A poetry trail is being organized by Rose Lawes and at 2.00 pm on Saturday the Library hosts a talk with local author David Evans and Councillor Mark Platt about Trains, Transport and Tourism. Or at the same time you might prefer to get help to compose your own poem with Tendring writer Elelia Ferro, using a vintage typewriter at the Parade Gardens near the Pier.


A Memory Café takes place 3.30 to 5.30 pm at the Yacht Club, Mill Lane for older people able to try their hand at writing creatively or from memory. It’s a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Charities. This activity is organised in conjunction with Community Volunteer Services Tendring.


On Sunday 22 September at 11.30 get down to Southcliff Beach near the Pier with Nancy Stephenson author of ‘Beach Hut People’who will be organising writing in the sand near beach hut 85.


Poet Brenda Wells will be hosting writing workshops with a focus on Nature and Wellbeing at 1.00 pm, near the Naze Tower and Essex Wildlife Trust Centre at The Naze. The centre are hosting lots of other festival activities throughout the week end.


Tendring Community Writers Group

Tendring Community Writers will be hosting a Young Writers Summer Challenge before the Festival Week end. Young people could choose to write a story, a poem, a letter, a poster, zine, comic or illustrated text on the Festival theme of Between the Tides. This project is supported by Tendring District Council, Tendring Local Cultural Education Partnership and Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. There will be a presentation on Sunday 22nd September, at the Essex Wildlife Trust Naze Centre with Dr Jules Pretty, University of Essex, Chair of Essex Climate Action, where entrants will receive a certificate of achievement and create stories together . Entries should have the creators name, age and a contact number or email address on the back. (Contact details will only be used to send an invite to the presentation at the Walton Arts Festival or post a certificate of achievement). Young people can drop their entries into the nOse Bookshop (Newgate Street, Walton-on-the-Naze, CO14 8AL) over the Summer holidays, or email an image of their work to tendringcomwriters@outlook.com, until Saturday 14th September 2024.
