Sunday on the Naze – fun for all the family

Updated: Aug 25

What a way to spend a Sunday morning! And it all kicks off at 10am, Sunday the 22nd September.

It’s all happening on the ground, in the air and everywhere in between. The in between bit is two sessions of parachute making before all the participants see their favourite cuddly toy fly sedately (we hope) from the top of Naze Tower to the ground. Parachuting Teddy Bears first session starts at 11am with a follow up at 1pm. The teds will be flying at 12.15pm and 2.15pm.

But you won’t be bored! For the petrolheads, Frinton Gaskets will be bringing an amazing collection of classic cars and bike. Remember the days when you knew what went on under the bonnet and you had wind up windows. They’ll be showing off their vehicles between 1am and noon.

Assuming there’s a breeze, (and when is there not?), the East Anglian Kite Flyers will be stunning everyone with kites in sizes and shapes that seem to defy all the laws of physics. There seems no limit to the kite builders’ imagination. From astronauts to butterflies, from aliens to whales and big cats, there’s no telling what might be gracing the skies above your head. They’ll be in action from 10am to 2.00pm.

No visit to the Naze should ignore the Naze Protection Society. It’s through their enthusiasm and ongoing efforts that we have any chance of preserving the habitats of both the Naze and Hamford Water. These are unique habitats that overwintering Brent Geese and Shelduck choose and are joined by nationally important colonies of Little Tern and Avocet.

The birds love it and so do the many thousands of people who visit the Naze every year. It’s a wonderful location we cannot afford to lose. So visit the stand and spend a bit, it’s worth it.

To further promote the importance of the location to wildlife, the Essex Wildlife Centre will be showing two short films throughout the morning.

While involvement with the environment contributes to our wellbeing, Tendring Community Writers will be running a Nature and Wellbeing Writing Workshop between 1.00pm and 3.00pm. You don’t need to be a ‘writer’ to get the benefit of writing. Anyone can do it and will find that sometimes they can express themselves and their feelings in jotting down a few dozen words. Give it a try.
